The Group Stage Numbers Game

Not all World Cup groups are created equal. Group B has produced more goals than any other, Group F is a graveyard for attackers, and Group C has the most goalless draws. Which group would you want to be drawn in?

The Goals Race

Total goals scored across all World Cup editions, ranked by group. Group B leads the pack with 343 goals from 115 games, while the shorter-lived Groups G and H have had less opportunity to build their tallies.

Goals Per Game

Strip away the volume and focus on intensity. Group B averages nearly 3 goals per game, while Group F manages just over 2. The rose chart sizes each petal by average, revealing at a glance where the action is.

Group Personality

Every group has a character. Some are high-scoring thrillers, others tight and tactical. The radar plots five dimensions of each group's identity - goals per game, blowout rate, draw rate, goalless rate, and one-goal-game rate.

Goalless vs Blowouts

Where does each group sit on the spectrum between dull stalemates and one-sided demolitions? Bubble size reflects total games played. Groups G and H pack their punch into fewer fixtures.

First-Listed Team Advantage

In every group, the first-listed team (typically the higher-seeded or home side) outscores their opponents overall. But the margin varies wildly - Group C has a massive +120 goal advantage, while Group H is almost level at just +4.

How Close Are the Games?

A breakdown of game types across each group. Are matches tight one-goal affairs, or wide-open goal fests? This stacked view reveals the competitive DNA of each group at a glance.

The Verdict

Group B is the undisputed entertainment capital of the World Cup group stage - the most goals, the highest average, and home to two 11-goal classics. If you want drama, this is the draw you want.

At the other end, Group F is where goals go to die, and Group H remains so new it barely registers. Of course, with expanded formats and new groups appearing over the decades, these numbers will keep evolving. But for now, Group B wears the crown.

Data covers all FIFA World Cup group stage matches from 1930 to 2022. Groups are mapped across format changes (e.g., Group 1 becomes Group A). Games from the 1950 tournament's unconventional format are included where applicable.
